Follow-up message and instructions from union to all Kanto teachers:
Union members,
Management has sent out a "termination acknowledgement" sheet to all
teachers.
This paper will not change the current status of a teachers' position as a
continuing employment status. Because, no teachers at ECC are employed for
just one year and leave here. Legally, this fact, a continuing teaching
position, will be more important than a mere sheet of paper. However, it
can be used to intimidate and embarass teachers when the time of a
contract renewal comes, weakening a teacher's postion psychologically.
Union will notify management that all teachers are not here for just one
year, but, for a continuing employment; and, that this is most important
for ECC mangement as well in order to provide good lessons, be competitive
in the market.
Union will demand management to stop this practice of sending a
termination notification.
Union will also remind management that there is an agreement between this
union and ECC on how to "terminate"/not renew a contract: 1) a verbal
warning and time for correction; 2) a written warning and time for
correction; 3) putting a teacher on probation and time for last trial of
correction.
In the meantime, we request all union members to reply to this
"termination acknowledgement" with a rider. One example is as follows:
1. cross out the line "I have received this as as notification of
expiration of the 2008-2009 contract"
2. write below it,
"I acknowledge my continuing employment at ECC and the routine renewal of
my 2008-2009 contract to 2009-2010."
or
" I acknowledge the ECC teaching position as being continuing employment
beyond any single contract year."
If you have already sent it in, you can send in a fax or mail to the
personnel, saying the same:
"I acknowledge my continuing employment at ECC and the routine renewal of
my 2008-2009 contract to 2009-2010."
or
" I acknowledge the ECC teaching position as being continuing employment
beyond any single contract year."

Notice to membership:
Hello members: You have all by now received the spring survey with a
curious additional page requesting you to sign an acknowlegment of the
termination of your current contract effective March 31 2009. Please do
not sign and send this in. Please wait a few days until further notice
from the union. Under japanese law employment at ECC is continuous,
contracts don't expire, they automatically renew. Don't sign anything!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the meeting tonight, especially the new members. It was a good launch to a new round of negotiations. Lots of great ideas.

minutes, messages to the membership etc.
Added a Chatbox.
Someone sent me a copy of the latest (?) issue of Voice; a broadsheet covering union issues in the Eikaiwa industry (I think…) A link is in the Documents page.
Minutes of the last Union Negotiation posted to the Documents page and Forums. The follow up meeting will be 2008.3.25
